Beware lest any man spoil you...

What you're about to read may forever destroy some of your long held beliefs about God's Word as it relates to your salvation!  Colossians 2:8, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." At this point you might ask yourself, "Which do I allow to dictate my beliefs and actions toward God, His Holy Word (which will save me), or the tradition of men (which will spoil, or ruin  me)? "We're not left to just guess which is right, because Jesus appointed a spokesman for His true church. In Matthew 16:18-19 Jesus said,  "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock  I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  19.  And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." So, Peter was made the spokesman for the church that Jesus said He would build!

On the day of Pentecost, the day that this glorious church was born, Peter was asked the question by some men, , "...What shall we do?" Acts 2:38, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

In Acts 10 this same Peter preached to the Gentiles gathered at Cornelius' house,  Acts 10:47-48, "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48.  And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord..."

That's what God's Word has to say on this vital subject. What does the tradition of men say? Most religious  teachings dismiss the necessity of baptism as it relates to salvation altogether. However, Jesus Himself said, Mark 16:16, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Jesus was baptized by John "to fulfill all righteousness", (Matthew 3:15). If Jesus taught baptism, and He was baptized as an example for us, and  if His disciples commanded it, dare we say it is not necessary?

Not only have modern religious teachings  relegated baptism to insignificance, but they have even  changed the formula for those who choose to be baptized.

Peter  commanded that baptism be administered to everyone, 'In the name of Jesus Christ'." But the tradition of men has changed it to "The name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost". Which is right? Tradition or the Word of God? What gives anyone the authority to change that which is expressly commanded in the holy Scriptures? Yet, that is just what traditional religions have done. Here's proof.

Encyclopedia Britannica: 11th Edit. pg. 365-366, "The baptismal formula was changed from the name of Jesus Christ to the words Father, Son and Holy Ghost by the Catholic church in the second century."

Caney Encyclopedia of Religion: "The early church always baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus until the development of the trinity doctrine in the second century.

"Catholic Encyclopedia: Vol. 2, pg. 263 acknowledges that the formula of baptism was changed by the Catholic church.

Hastings Encyclopedia of Religion: Vol. 2 pg. 377, "Christian baptism was administered using the words 'In the name of' Jesus Christ' ".Vol. 2 pg 383, "Baptism was always in the name of the Lord Jesus until the time of Justin Martyr when the triune formula was used. "Vol. 2 pg 377, "Name was a ancient synonym for 'person'. Payment was always made in the name of some person, referring to ownership. Therefore, to be baptized in Jesus' name is to become His personal property."

Is this just a case of 'majoring on a  minor? Ask yourself this question: Who died for your    sins? If we're asking Jesus' forgiveness, should        we not use His name?

To be baptized in Jesus' name is to fulfill Jesus' command to His disciples in Matthew 28: 19, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."  Notice, ''Father, Son and Holy Ghost are not names, but titles. What is the name of the Father? Jesus  said    in John 5:43, "I am come in my Father's name..." What is the name of  the Son?  Matthew 1: 21, "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt  call his name JESUS..."

What is name of the Holy Ghost's? John 14:26, (This is Jesus speaking),  "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name..." Clearly, the revealed name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost is Jesus Christ!   And Acts 4:12 declares, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." That's not tradition, that's  truth! Don't trust your eternal soul to the tradition of men. Come,  let us  baptize you In Jesus' name, and you'll be in the church that Jesus built!
